GGU-GABION: System description (Ex. 1)
As, from personal experience, the reading of user-manuals is a chore, there will now follow a short description of the main program functions. After studying this section, you will be able to carry out analyses. You can take the details of the program from the following chapters.

A 3 m high terrace with a 1 m high head berm, inclined at 1 : 2 is to be supported. A vertical load of 5 kN/m² acts on the berm. The angle of repose of the gabion elements is 82°. The design groundwater level is at 1.5 m below ground level (b GL). The backfill is a gravel-sand. Below this is a medium-compact sand. 4 gabion elements with a uniform height of 1.0 m each and a uniform width of 1.6 m are used. The following material properties are present:
Gabions
unit weight γ = 18 kN/m³
friction coefficient in the joints μ = 0.6
design concrete compressive strength fm,d (EC 2) of the elements = 0.20 MN/m²Gravel-sand
friction angle φ = 35°
cohesion c = 0 kN/m²
wet unit weight γ = 18 kN/m³
wall friction angle (active) = 2/3 φSand
friction angle φ = 32.5°
cohesion c = 0 kN/m²
wet unit weight γ = 19 kN/m³
buoyant unit weight γ' = 10 kN/m³
wall friction angle (active) = 2/3 φ
no passive earth pressure used
